Measure how far a radio reaches
How far the radio reaches in your house, with signal strength and packet loss per room.
Hard1 evening
Ran here through Sub-1 GHz CC1407P radio on an LP-MSPM0G5187, heard by an LP-CC1354P10-1
Sub-1 GHz CC1407P radio on an LP-MSPM0G5187, heard by an LP-CC1354P10-1
TI's CC1407P sub-1 GHz radio driver runs unchanged on the MSPM0 G5187, and a CC1354P10-1 receives its packets: 21,658 of 21,658.
Build
RADIO_APP=radio_tx RADIO_CFLAGS=-DHB_INT_POLL mspm0g5187/radio/build.shYou should see: The sender's serial port prints a line such as: tx FRL n=12 t=24.80C rh=36.9% lux=207.20 -> sent status=16 ev=0x0000004c sent=12 failed=0
What to build next
Every build. The code for all of them is in the GitHub repository.
Evidence and limitsNo range was measured: a sub-1 GHz link sent 21,658 of 21,658 packets on one desk. Ran on 1 board. Results, sources, timing and limits.
Which boards ran it
- Could work LP-MSPM0G5187: The sub-1 GHz radio ran, OFDM included on transmit. A CC1407P BoosterPack on this board sent 21,658 of 21,658 packets to a CC1354P10-1 at 915 MHz, -14 dBm on one desk. It also sent all 23 of TI's radio modes, every OFDM mode among them, from 0.69 kbps to about 2.2 Mbps. No OFDM receiver is on the bench, so nothing received those packets. Reach through the rooms of a house is not measured.

| Not for this chip | Can a C2000 LaunchPad (LAUNCHXL-F2800137, 16-bit char) host the BP-CC1407P radio driver? LAUNCHXL-F2800137, 2026-10-08 | TI's CC1407P host driver does not compile for the C28x as shipped. It gives 524 errors: no uint8_t, and a packed attribute the C2000 compiler rejects. With C2000Ware's 16-bit uint8_t and the attribute defined away,... |
| Works | Can an MSPM0 host TI's CC1407P radio, the BP-CC1407P-9-FE, and send sensor readings to another board? MSPM0 G5187, 2026-10-10 | TI's CC1407P host driver runs on the MSPM0G5187 with its driver files unchanged and its two Zephyr-only files replaced by this repo's bare-metal layer. It needs eight wires, because the LaunchPad has pins only on J1... |
| Works | Can an MSPM0 host run every protocol TI's CC1407P has, and keep up on the fastest? MSPM0 G5187, 2026-10-11 | On transmit, all 23 of TI's CC1407P PHY profiles ran from the MSPM0G5187. That is 345 of 345 packets, each within 3.4 percent of TI's stated rate. Receive was checked where a CC1354P10 setting exists: Wi-SUN FSK 2b... |
| Works | Can TI's CC1407P and CC1354P10 talk to each other on every protocol they share? MSPM0 G5187, 2026-10-11 | On 2-GFSK 50 kbps and Wi-SUN FSK modes 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3 and 4b, 20 of 20 packets went both ways between the CC1407P on an MSPM0G5187 and a CC1354P10. Modes 4a and 5 lose packets toward the CC1407P. Pings are partial... |
| Works | Can one TI radio and an MSPM0 run family demos: walkie-talkie, fox hunt, key finder, smart house? MSPM0 G5187, 2026-10-11 | All five demos work as built. One-way voice passed 122 of 122 frames. Fox hunt heard 64 of 64 beacons, hot to cool. The key finder answered 10 of 10 in 21 ms. The house node sent mailbox, doorbell, panic, kid messages... |
